How to Build Confidence in a Young Footballer

By Diego Pagliuso

Youth Football Mental Performance Coach

One of the most common things I hear from parents is:

“My child just needs more confidence.”

They see their child in training and know what they are capable of.

But then matchday comes.

They hide from the ball. They play safe. They worry about making mistakes. They overthink decisions. Sometimes one mistake completely changes their performance.

So naturally, parents try to help.

More training.

Encouragement.

Motivational talks.

Telling them, “Just believe in yourself.”

But often nothing really changes.

The big misunderstanding about confidence

The biggest misconception about confidence is that a player needs to feel confident before they can play confidently.

They don't.

Nerves, doubts and negative thoughts are completely normal.

The problem isn't necessarily that your child experiences them.

The problem is that they haven't been taught what to do when they experience them.

Footballers spend hours every week training technically and physically, but very little time actually training their mind.

And yet how they think and feel can have a huge impact on how they perform.

Confidence can be trained

This is the message I want more football parents to understand:

Confidence isn't just a personality trait.

It is something we can work on.

Players can learn how to deal with mistakes.

They can learn how to manage negative thoughts.

They can learn how to stop overthinking.

They can learn how to focus on what they can control.

And importantly, they can learn to take confident actions even when they don't feel confident.

But just like technical development, this doesn't happen from one conversation before a match.

It needs to be trained consistently.

That's why I created The Confidence Academy

I created The Confidence Academy to give young footballers a place to actually train the mental side of their game every week.

We work on things like:

  • Confidence
  • Mistakes
  • Pressure
  • Overthinking
  • Focus
  • Self-talk

Players learn practical mental tools they can start applying to their football.

Because sometimes your child doesn't need another technical session.

They need to learn how to get more out of the ability they already have.

Help your child train the mental side of their game

The Confidence Academy provides weekly live mental performance coaching for footballers aged 9–15.

Help them build confidence, manage mistakes, stop overthinking and perform with more freedom.
